Harnessing AI & Advanced Analytics to Decode 30+ Billion Rows of EHR Data
The COVID-19 pandemic brought unprecedented challenges to global healthcare systems, raising urgent questions about disease management, patient care, and public health strategies. Amid the crisis, there was a growing demand from biomedical research organizations, pharmaceutical companies, and government agencies for comprehensive COVID-19-related data. The goal was clear: leverage all possible data to better understand and combat the pandemic. However, a significant challenge arose— the siloed nature of healthcare data.
Recognizing the need for a centralized and collaborative resource, Quantum Insights, Quantum Insights and the National Institutes of Health (NIH) created the National Covid Cohort Collaborative (N3C), a centralized cloud platform for COVID-19 data and analytics. At the heart of the N3C platform is a robust AI-powered analytics infrastructure, built on Palantir Foundry and AWS GovCloud, enabling advanced processing of diverse COVID-19 data for research.
To streamline COVID-19 research, Quantum Insights formed 30+ specialized groups that collectively answered over 600+ critical questions, delivering vital insights into transmission, impact, and treatment.
The platform enabled over 80 hospital systems and research organizations to harmonize their data using the OMOP (Observational Medical Outcomes Partnership) common data model. Standardizing data ensured consistency, enabling large-scale analytics across N3C’s environment called “Enclave,” with researchers accessing tools via Palantir’s platform.
One of the key breakthroughs was the development of a Privacy Preserving Record Linkage (PPRL) system, which used cryptographic hashes to link patient data across repositories while protecting privacy. A trusted broker matched the hashes, ensuring privacy regulations, like informed consent, were met without exposing Personally Identifiable Information (PII).
Quantum Insights’ work with N3C has redefined biomedical research by integrating AI, advanced analytics, and collaborative governance, enabling secure data linking and AI-driven insights to advance research in chronic diseases, rare diseases, and pandemic preparedness.
