The National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) Scientific Review Program (SRP) is instrumental in advancing scientific research by conducting thorough peer reviews of grant applications. Historically, Scientific Review Officers (SROs) manually identified COIs by sifting through large data volumes, a labor-intensive and error-prone process.

AI-Driven Conflict of Interest Detection

Quantum Insights, in collaboration with Palantir Technologies, developed the Electronic Scientific Review Assistant (eSRA) , an AI-powered tool designed to automate and streamline the COI identification process. By integrating AI, ML, and Natural Language Processing (NLP), eSRA improves the speed and accuracy of COI detection. It extracts key PubMed Medical Subject Headings (MeSH) from grant applications using NLP to identify relevant research and authors. Machine learning algorithms, like k-nearest neighbors and hierarchical clustering, match reviewers based on expertise, working alongside Large Language Models (LLMs) to ensure accurate matching. Additionally, eSRA uses cryptographic hashing to protect Personally Identifiable Information (PII), ensuring data privacy.

Manual COI Detection

Previously, a significant 65% of COI identification was done manually, requiring staff to sift through extensive data, making the process time-consuming and error-prone

Once relevant reviewers are identified, the system cross-references their publication histories and affiliations to detect potential conflicts of interest. Augmented profiles with COI data help SROs make informed decisions, while eSRA learns from feedback to improve accuracy and reduce manual intervention.

Improving Efficiency and Accuracy in Grant Reviews

The introduction of eSRA has cut COI identification time by 50%, enabling SROs to focus on more strategic tasks. It improves COI detection accuracy, reducing false positives/negatives, and ensures unbiased reviewer selection.
